    Route from Fagajesto to Agaete

From the green meadows of Altos de Gáldar to the warm valley of Agaete

The valley of Agaete, or “El Valle” as it is known for their local people, it is a long valley set between verticals when seen from the sea. This especial orography is the reason why the climate in Agaete is so special within the island of Gran Canaria. This itinerary runs from Altos of Galdar, sometimes through a sea of clouds, to the sunny and exotic valley of Agaete. The route starts in GC-220 road, between Fagajesto and Juncalillo, right in the crossing of El Hornillo, next to the bus shelter.

1- First, we follow El Hornillo road, we turn right when we get to the high tension tower and then we take the pathway we will find there. This pathway goes up into a gully and it immediately starts to descent alternating small straight stretch with repeated loops. After crossing the crag and descending big part of it, the way forward is provided with a small ramp built next to a rock.

2- We will find a small building on the left side. This building is a small windmill that still preserves its wooden turbine and some grinding stones around. This stones were built of carved voussoir and then they were linked with a metallic hoop. Depending on the shape of the stones, whether they are flat or trapezoidal, we can know if they were fixed or mobile stones. Following the pathway, we will pass next to a washing place and another windmill, this one half covered by weeds.

3- Further down, we will come out onto a very well marked pathway. This is the route from Agaete to El Hornillo. We will turn right, in the direction of Agaete, and on the opposite side of the gully we will be able to see an odd building with a big tower. This is the standpipe of the windmill. We will soon be walking through the neighbourhood of Sao, and across the street, we will get into a road that we must follow downhill on the left side until finding the main road(…)

4- (…)to go into the valley. The way to AGAETE diverges on the road. After a flat stretch below this road, we must turn at a bend in it and descend over a pine woods.

5- Then we will pass next to an old inn, Hotel Princesa Guayarmina, where we will have to cross between two doorways while we keep on descending. This is the neighbourhood of Los Berrazales, famous for its ferruginous spring water. Once we get into the gully, we ignore a small footbridge and we go on descending between the plots and the gully beds that we must follow for a while. We will end up in a street continue…

6- …in the direction of AGAETE to go on by an asphalted road. We leave the road through a paved road that diverges on the left side and in the next fork we keep on descending on the left side to pass next to a white house with a green banister.

7- We will get to a football stadium and continue through the left track until we get to a bridge.

8- We are now in San Pedro and to follow the route towards Agaete we must cross the gully and in the right side follow the street and then the road access to San Pedro.

9- At this point we can either take the road GC-231 or wait for the bus.

10- When we arrive in Agaete we keep on straight ahead in the direction of El Puerto de Las Nieves until we get to Plaza Francisco de Armas where we have to turn left.

11- In the next small square we turn right to gain access to the church square. End of the route.
Here, in this square, if we want to visit the Huerto de Las Flores we must go straight ahead and get into through a gate of wrought iron on the right side of the street.

12-The bus stop is in front of the church, in the right side corner.
