    DETAILS

Route from San Bartolomé to Santa Lucía de Tirajana

Walking into the heart of La Caldera de Tirajana

La Caldera de Tirajana is the name given to this basin of erosive origin surrounded by vertical crags that characterize this region. The dark colours of the steep slopes contrast with the white colours of the houses in the villages and also with the green ones of the palm trees at the bottom of the valley.
Santa Lucía broke away from San Bartolomé, also known as Tunte by the aborigines, in the nineteenth century. The route we will do is part of the ´Camino Real´ (The King´s Highway) that linked them in the past.

1-The beginning of this route, between San Bartolomé and Santa Lucía, starts in front of Iglesia de Santiago, a neoclassical style church, where there is a equestrian statue of Santigo that parishioners revere. We cross the Town Hall on the right side of the church to come out onto CALLE CAPITÁN CORTÉS. At the end of this street we turn right until we get to MIRADOR DE LA ORILLA (viewpoint), a place in which there is a resting area that was used in the past by the pallbearers after climbing up by the steep ascent to the village.

In this route we will start descending uphill over a couple of loops until getting to the connection with the road that we must follow ahead.

2-When the road starts turning right we must leave it to take a downward path on the right side in the direction of ROSIANA and SANTA LUCÍA. When the track turns left to gain access to a field we keep going straight ahead through a pathway that still preserves the old cobbles. Meanwhile we continue descending.
Now we get to a paved road crossing. Here in this point we must keep moving straight ahead. This track descends gently and goes across next to the building BAÑOS PUBLICOS DE LA MONTAÑA(…)

3- (…)and a small chapel that we must leave on the right side.

4- We will soon take the main access road GC-65 that we will have to use to cross the gully of Tirajana and go into the neighbourhood of ROSIANA. We cross it and as soon as we get out we turn right into a dead end alley that we leave quickly to take CAMINO PÚBLICO. This goes under the wall of a plot and then connects with a dirt track. Across this stretch we will pass between several farms where we can see some crops with exotic fruits and also vine and olive tress. In the next crossroad we continue straight ahead and then we will find a paved road that we must follow on the left side uphill. We ignore the track that diverges to the left at house number 100 and we continue by the asphalted road we find.

5- In front of the house that has a small wall in white, we go off course and keep on by the paved road that is on the right side. This road first descends and then ascents towards a small group of modern buildings. We leave these buildings on our left side and walk again between farms until we get to a branch with a palm tree. Our route continues on the left side track next to the FINCA LA SOLANA.

6-. When getting to a crossroad we must turn left in the opposite direction of a wooden sign and walk through a track that gains height very fast. Now we arrive in Santa Lucía where we have to cross the road and go through CALLE PEREZ DEL TORO to reach Santa Lucía Square that is the place where the church is.

If we want to return by bus we have two bus stops; one is located before getting to Perez del Toro street, and to get to the other one we have to climb down the stairs that are on the right side of the road and that take us to Museo del Hao, in the shape of a castle.

This route connects with the route from Santa Lucía to Agüimes that has a distance of 16,17 kms and an approximate length of 4h and 40min.
